Manager of Digitization
This position oversees the daily activities of Digital Collections and the Digitization Laboratory which engages in the digitization, digital processing, description, access, and digital preservation of archival materials. This position is responsible for technical infrastructure including the digital preservation system, content management systems, discovery layers, and websites.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Oversees the daily operations and activities of Digital Collections including the digital lab, digital projects, digitization, metadata, access, and digital preservation. Tasks include but are not limited to:
- Trains others on all necessary workflows, standards, equipment, and related software.
- Creates and updates procedures as needed in consultation with the Head of Technology.
- Resolves daily operational challenges including identifying priority conflicts, issues of workload, operational efficiency and coordination as well as formulating proposed courses of action to ensure that all objectives and deadlines are being met.
- Maintains technical infrastructure of Digital Collections and associated projects including the digital preservation system, websites, content management systems, and discovery layers.
- Stays current with relevant issues, trends, and national standards.
- Supervises Digitization Specialist, Metadata Coordinator
- Activities include but are not limited to: managing staff time, setting assignments, performance evaluations, training, staff development, assisting with hiring, and managing student assistant operations for the department.
- Implements cross training to ensure backup throughout the unit.
- Identifies staff development, training and performance concerns and promptly makes appropriate recommendations to the Head of Technology.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field; two to three years of related digitization experience; and at least one year of supervisory experience.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of digitization, metadata, intellectual property rights, and digital preservation standards and workflows.
- Ability to troubleshoot and resolve routine computer, server, and systems issues.
- Ability to learn new technologies quickly and assess and integrate appropriate complex and rapidly evolving technologies.
- Ability to effectively plan, delegate the work of others, and report on multiple projects.
- Ability to effectively manage multiple employees as well as relationships with partnering institutions and other stakeholders.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
